The 77th Cannes Film Festival recently announced its official selection of short films and films from the CINEF, highlighting the new talents in the world of cinema. Lubna Azabal, Belgian actress of Moroccan origin, presides over the jury made up of eminent figures of the film industry.
Lubna Azabal – President of the jury
Lubna Azabal embodies the quintessence of artistic excellence. Her exceptional career begins at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she refines her art before making her noticed debut in the short film by Vincent Lannoo, I love cinema (1997). Since then, she has illuminated the screen alongside renowned directors such as Michel Deville, Ridley Scott, André Téchiné, and Denis Villeneuve. Its poignant performance in Exiles (2004) by Tony Gatlif earned him international recognition, marked by the Prix de la Direction in Cannes. Of Sofia (2018) from Merym Benm’Barek-Aloïsi in Adam (2019) and ” The blue of the caftan (2022), by Maryam Touzani, Lubna Azabal continues to dazzle the public with his undeniable talent, accumulating three Magritte of the best actress.
The other members of the jury:
-Marie-Castille Mention-Schaar (France): director, screenwriter, producer, she marked the French cinematographic landscape with works like The heirs (2014) and A good man (2020).
– Paolo Moretti (Italy): renowned programmer, Paolo Moretti has an impressive international experience, having worked for leading institutions and festivals in Europe.
– Claudine Nougaret (France): producer and director, she contributed significantly to the French documentary, with acclaimed films such as EMERGENCIES (1997) and Residents (2016).
– Vladimir Perišić (Serbia): director and screenwriter, he captivated the public with films such as Ordinary people (2009) and Lost country (2023), revealing his talent to combine politics and intimate.
Competition of short films:
Of the 4,420 films submitted, only 11 were selected to compete for the golden palm of the short film. Originally from 11 different countries, these works represent the diversity and richness of world cinema. From France to China, including Kosovo and Portugal, each film brings its own vision and its unique aesthetic to competition. The Palme d’Or of the short film will be handed over by the jury chaired by Lubna Azabal on Saturday May 25 during the chart ceremony of the 77th Cannes Festival.

Cinef selection:
For its 27th edition, the CINEF retained 18 films among the 2,263 presented by film schools around the world. This diversified selection testifies to the creativity and vitality of the young generation of filmmakers. Prestigious cinema schools such as the London Film School, NYU and FAMO are represented, offering a global perspective on the aspirations and concerns of budding filmmakers.
The jury will give the three prizes of the CINEF during a ceremony preceding the screening of the awarded films on Thursday, May 23 in the Buñuel room.
