BMW recalls 1.6 million “3 series”, former generation worldwide

The German automaker BMW announced, this Wednesday, July 16, the recall of around 1.6 million cars worldwide due to potentially defective airbags made by a subcontractor.

This decision concerns the copies of an old generation (E46) of its series 3 model produced between May 1999 and August 2006, according to a press release from the Munich group reported by AFP.

This is a voluntary precautionary measure to minimize the risk of abnormal airbag opening for the passenger, said BMW, which ensures that it has identified any problem.

The figure of 1.6 million vehicles includes 240,000 cars already recalled by the high -end manufacturer in 2013 for a problem of airbags manufactured by the Japanese company Takata, one of the main world manufacturers of airbag systems. For the latter, a new airbag exchange is not necessary, specifies BMW.

The defect, detected in rare cases in competition vehicles using the same subcontractor systems, from the gas generator which ensures the deployment of the airbag, explains the group.

The problem of influencing its airbags, which may not operate normally and cause an explosion or a fire departure, caused massive reminders, estimated at more than 10 million units, from large car manufacturers like Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Chrysler and Ford.
