As announced by Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, during the press conference of April 11, 2024the Cannes Film Festival has just unveiled a complement of 13 films to its official selection.
In official competition, we find The most precious goods From Michel Hazanavicius, an animated film exploring the horrors of the Second World War through a unique and moving perspective. This choice also marks a first in 15 years for Cannes, which had not included an animated film in competition since 2008.
The director, Michel Hazanavicius, whose film Cut! had opened the 75th festival de Cannes, is known for his innovative work in films such as The Artist (2011), Who won several prestigious awards, including the male interpretation prize in Cannes and five Oscars in Los Angeles: best film, best director, best actor (Jean Dujardin), best music and best costumes. For this project, Michel Hazanavicius is inspired by the eponymous novel by Jean-Claude Grumberg, published in 2019. This novel, considered a poignant tale, takes place during the Second World War and tells the story of a Polish couple of loggers who discovers an abandoned Jewish baby while they are working. The film explores the themes of survival, resilience and hope in the midst of war horror. One remarkable aspect of this film is the voice of Jean Louis Trintignant (1930 – 2022), which embodies his latest “role” posthumously in this film.
The participation of The most precious goods To the official competition of Cannes testifies to the recognition of animation as a major art in contemporary cinema, and promises to offer an emotional and captivating cinematographic experience to the spectators of the festival.
Will also compete for the Palme d’Or The Seed of the Sacred Fig From the Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof, known for his artistic courage in the face of political oppression. Another film also joins the competition, Three kilometers until the end of the world From the Romanian director Emanuel Part, a family drama which focuses on a Romanian family torn apart by homophobia.
One of the most anticipated films this summer, Count of Monte-Cristoproduced by Alexandre de la Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, will assault the red carpet of the Palais des Festivals in Hors Competition. Carried by Pierre Niney’s impressive performance in the title role, this captivating historical adventure story transports spectators in an epic journey through the machinations of revenge and justice. The presence of a leading distribution, notably with Anaïs Demoustier, Laurent Lafitte, and Anamaria Vartolomei, promises an unforgettable cinematographic experience. The film is an adaptation of the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas and tells the story of Edmond Dantès, played by Niney, victim of a diabolical machination, captive for generations the readers, and this cinematographic adaptation promises to be epic.
Special sessions and off -competition projections further enhance the programming of the festival, with remarkable works such as Spectators d’Arnaud Desplechin, Nasty by Tudor Giurgiu, and Maria by Jessica Palud, offering a diversity of cinematographic perspectives and styles.
This yearthe jury chaired by Greta Gerwig will be responsible for awarding the golden palmone of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema. With such a diverse and exciting selection, the suspense is at its height as to which film will mark the history of cinema with this prestigious reward.
