Clashes broke out Thursday evening near Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam, highlighting a climb of tensions initiated by Maccabi supporters such as Aviv before their Europa League match against Ajax Amsterdam.
Even before the kick-off of this sports meeting, which ended in a scathing defeat (5-0) for the Israeli team, several hundred supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv had organized a rally on the main square of Amsterdam.
What was to be a simple demonstration of support quickly turned into a provocative demonstration, marked by hostile songs and acts of provocation.
The rocking point has been reached when Israeli supporters have deliberately torn off a Palestinian flag hanging from a building, a gesture captured by several videos broadcast on social networks. These images clearly show fans chanting slogans while an individual was attacking the flag. In response, sympathizers of the Palestinian cause attacked Israeli supporters.
Following these incidents, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported ten injured Israeli nationals and two other “missing”.
Israeli political analyst Or Goldberg criticized these events by declaring: “The fact that Israeli supporters cause disorders in the heart of Amsterdam, sing racist songs and climb walls to tear Palestinian flags reflects the current state of mind in Israel: a total detachment between actions and their consequences”.
