Tunisian justice has condemned, the businessman and former minister Mehdi Ben Gharbia to eight years in prison in the context of four distinct cases of a financial and customs nature, linked to the management of a commercial company. Two other defendants are also prosecuted in this file.

The correctional chamber specializing in financial corruption affairs, falling under the Tunis court of first instance, rendered its verdict against Mehdi Ben Gharbia, ex-minister of relations with constitutional bodies, civil society and human rights, reports Mosaique FM today.

Ben Gharbia was found guilty in four distinct files relating to economic and customs offenses, linked to a commercial company that he managed. The court pronounced, for each case, a sentence of two years in prison with a financial fine, bringing the total sentence to eight years’ imprisonment.

Two other people, presented as his accomplices in the management of the company concerned, are also involved in the case. According to investigations, the charges chosen against the accused relate in particular to money laundering, the falsification of commercial documents and illicit customs practices.

As a reminder, Mehdi Ben Gharbia, a known figure in the political and entrepreneurial scene, had been arrested in October 2021, before being released and then reinforced following new judicial developments.
