Lieutenant-General Igor Kirillov, chief of the Russian nuclear, biological and chemical defense forces, died in an explosion in the morning of Tuesday, December 17, near a residential building located in the south-east of Moscow. The information was confirmed by the Russian Inquiry Committee, the main body responsible for investigations in the country.
According to a press release from this committee, quoted by AFP, “an explosive device hidden in a scooter stationed near the entrance to a residential building exploded in the morning of December 17, on avenue Riazanski in Moscow”. For their part, several American media report that the explosion would have involved an electric scooter.
The Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) claimed the assassination of a senior Russian army official on Tuesday morning in an explosion in Moscow, a source in SBU told AFP.
“The bomb attack perpetrated today against Lieutenant-General Igor Kirillov, commander of the radiological, chemical and biological defense troops of the Russian armed forces, is a special SBU operation,” said this source.
