The administration of the president elected Donald Trump envisages radical measures to respond to the persistent crisis in the Gaza Strip. Among the studies under study is a controversial initiative providing for the temporary “relocation” of part of the Palestinian population towards Indonesia.
This information, reported by NBC News, is part of a larger strategy aimed at improving the living conditions of the two million Palestinians living in the enclave.
According to a source close to the file, the need to provide concrete aid to the Gazaouis is pressing: “If we do not improve their lives and do not give them a glimmer of hope, there will be a revolt. This temporary displacement proposal, although presented as a transitional measure, already arouses great opposition. For many Palestinians and their allies in the Arab world, this idea risks turning into a permanent forced trip, compromising their right of return.
Indonesia, the main country mentioned to temporarily accommodate part of the Palestinian refugees, is found at the heart of this plan. However, no official declaration has confirmed Jakarta’s desire to accept such relocation. The idea already faces international criticism, including those of human rights organizations, which highlight the risks of instability and abuse.
Steve Wittkopp, emissary by Donald Trump for the Middle East, should supervise the implementation of these initiatives. His mandate includes both monitoring of the current ceasefire and the realization of long-term solutions for Gaza. Wittkopp plans to establish an almost permanent presence in the region in order to coordinate efforts.
