Does Tunisia seek to reconnect with Morocco?

According to “Hespress”, which holds its information from a source close to the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tunisia would take steps to normalize its relations with Morocco.

This initiative would aim to end three years of diplomatic tensions, launched by the reception of the leader of the Polisario Front by Tunisian President Kais Said at the Ticad summit in 2022.

“Tunisian diplomacy is working to go beyond disputes with Morocco and seeks to establish balanced relations with all the capitals of the Grand Maghreb, by breaking with the diplomatic freeze which has lasted for almost three years,” said this source to the Moroccan media.

The same source stressed that “the Tunisian state is animated by a strong desire to normalize relations with Morocco and to open a new page with the Moroccan brothers”. She said that “several initiatives have been taken recently in this direction”, while admitting that “these initiatives have encountered certain difficulties”, without revealing its nature.

According to these sources, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has recently multiplied initiatives to restore dialogue, despite certain not specified difficulties. The objective would be to restore a “balanced” relationship with all the Maghreb countries.

This diplomatic crisis had led to the recall of the Moroccan ambassador to Tunis, Rabat considering the reception of the separatist leader as a “serious and unprecedented act”. Although Tunisia has justified this presence by the obligations linked to the African Union, several observers note the absence of concrete actions of reconciliation, in particular due to the merger of Tunis with Algiers.

Recall that this is not the first time that Moroccan media consider that a possible rapprochement has been in sight. In August 2024, the head of Moroccan government Aziz Akhannouch and the former Tunisian Foreign Affairs Nabil Ammar met in Marseille on August 15, on the sidelines of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the South of France.

This meeting had aroused cautious optimism in the Moroccan media. “Morocco World News” had titled “Morocco-Tunisia Relations: Is the Ice Finully Melting? “, While” Ya Bladi “announced” After two years of tension, France welcomes a meeting between Morocco and Tunisia “. “The New Arab” had also stressed the importance of these talks after two years of diplomatic cold.
