Germany is preparing to shoot a new political page with the coming to power of Friedrich Merz.
His party, the Christian Democrat Union (CDU), won the federal elections of February 23 with 29 % of the vote, according to the first estimates.
But beyond this victory, it is the breakthrough of the extreme right that marks this ballot. Alternative for Germany (AFD) creates a surprise by doubling its 2021 score: with 19.5 % of the votes, the radical party is installed as the second political force of the country.
A spectacular progression, carried by an electoral thrust in ancient Western Germany and a campaign focused on immigration.
However, despite this success, AFD will remain at the gates of power. Friedrich Merz excluded all alliance with this training, a position reaffirmed several times during the campaign.
Participation has reached a record level: out of the 59.2 million voters called in the polls, 84 % mobilized, a clear increase compared to 2021 (76.4 %). Among them, 2.3 million young people voted for the first time, testifying to a renewed interest in these elections with major issues.
