The closing of the 7th edition of the El Gouna Film Festival took place yesterday, celebrating a new year of avant-garde cinema and daring creations in an enchanting setting. Among the winners of this edition, two Tunisian talents won major prizes.
Meryam Joobeur awarded for Where we come from/the source/mè el ain ::
The prize for the best Arab fiction film has been awarded ex aequo to Where we come from/the source/mè el ain of the Tunisian director Meryam Jobeur, alongside Thank You For Banking With Us! of the Palestinian Laila Abass.
Meryam Joobeur, a talented Tunisian director and screenwriter established in Montreal, continues to impress the world of cinema with her deep and poetic work. She made herself known in 2013 with her short documentary film Gods, Weeds and Revolutions. In 2020, his short film Broth (2028) received an Oscar appointmentand won over 72 international prizes, including the best Canadian short film at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It was screened in more than 160 festivals, including Sundance and the Carthage Cinematographic Days.
Mè el ain Mark his first feature film and was already widely praised during his first at the Berlin Festival, before being selected at several other international festivals.
The film follows the story of Aïcha, a mother living on a rural farm in Tunisia with her husband Brahim and their three sons. Aïcha is subject to prophetic dreams that reveal to come from future to come, in particular the commitment of his two elders in a distant war. The unexpected return of one of them, Mehdi, accompanied by his pregnant wife Rym, plunged into silence and hidden by a niqab, becomes the pivot of mysterious tensions in the village. Mè el ain portrayed the inner conflict of a torn mother between her love for her child and increasing anxiety about events that she cannot control. This captivating and poignant story attacks the themes of maternity, loss and sacrifice in a changing society.
Adam Bessa: Best actor for his role in Ghost Trail
Franco-Tunisian actor Adam Bessa was also distinguished last night, receiving the price for best actor for his intense interpretation in the film Ghost Trail Directed by Jonathan Millet. This role adds a new gratitude to the dazzling career of this young actor who, as a reminder, had already marked the spirits with his unforgettable performance in Harka (2022), produced by Lotfy Nathanwhere he embodied a rebellious young man, living in a Tunisia in full social boiling. Harka, who had contributed to the Un certain Labue section at the Cannes Film Festival, had earned Adam Bessa several best actor prices, crowning his ability to express complex emotions and interior torments with rare sincerity.
With this new reward, Adam Bessa confirms his place among the most talented actors of his generation. His interpretation in Ghost Trail Once again reflects the commitment and the depth he injects into each of his roles. Bravo to him for this powerful and authentic performance!
