In a context of heat wave and increased water in summer, the vigilance of the Tunisian health authorities is strengthening. In Sfax, the Control teams from the National Food Safety Instance (INSSPA) proceeded to seize more than 17,000 bottles of mineral water exposed directly to the sun, under conditions deemed non -compliant with health standards.
According to a press release published this Tuesday by the INSSPA, the operation made it possible to remove from the market 11,692 bottles of mineral water from different capacities (1 liter, 1.5 liters and 2 liters), as well as 5,510 bottles of 6 liters. All were stored or exposed to the outside, in full sun, in flagrant violation of the rules of conservation and sale.
Prolonged exposure of plastic bottles at high temperatures promotes the migration of chemical components to water, which can represent a real health danger, especially in the event of regular consumption. This risk is accentuated when the bottles are stored outdoors or near heat sources.
The INSSPA recalls that compliance with storage conditions – out of heat, sun and humidity – is a fundamental requirement to guarantee the safety of this vital product. The health authority thus calls for all players in the sector, including distributors and points of sale, to strengthen their precautions, under penalty of sanctions.
Reinforced checks and planned sanctions
The body ensures that it will continue its control campaigns in all regions of the country and apply the law with rigor. The planned sanctions include the seizure, the destruction of non-compliant products as well as the drafting of legal minutes, in accordance with the legislation in force.
Citizens are also invited to point out any suspicious offense or situation by contacting INSSPA services via the free green number 80 106 977 or the Direct number 70 168 050.
