On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the head of government, Kamel Madouri, chaired a limited ministerial council devoted to monitoring the recommendations of the World Heritage Commission for the cultural property of Djerba, registered on the UNESCO list on September 18, 2023.
At the opening of the meeting, the head of government stressed the importance of the implementation of the Vision of the President of the Republic in the conservation of material and intangible cultural heritage. According to him, this heritage constitutes a sovereign national wealth to be protected and preserved for current and future generations. He also mentioned the need to strengthen the legal framework for the protection and sustainability of this heritage, by mobilizing all the efforts and resources necessary to comply with the commitments to the World Heritage Commission.
Madourri insisted on the need for all stakeholders to fulfill their responsibilities optimally, following a precise calendar, in order to guarantee the valuation and preservation of this human cultural heritage of global importance, essential to local cultural specificity and the richness of national identity.
The Minister of Cultural Affairs presented an inventory of the cultural good, exposing the main components of the heritage, the progress of the work carried out, the important achievements, as well as the future recommendations.
At the end of the work, the Council adopted the following measures:
Establish a detailed calendar of future interventions, in accordance with the deadlines set by Tunisia’s commitments to UNESCO.
Ensure the legal protection of all the elements of cultural good and improve its governance system, while looking for sustainable funding sources for its long -term preservation.
Provide the World Heritage Center with technical reports and documents attesting to the progress of projects.
Encourage coordination between the ministries concerned to accelerate the implementation of the recommendations of the World Heritage Commission and follow their execution according to a defined calendar.
Find the best formula to supervise the direction and governance of the requirements of the “Djerba: witness to an island urbanization model, taking into account the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in the Ministry of Culture.
