Late in the evening of Friday, July 19, a fire broke out in an oasis of tozeur causing heavy damage.
About four hectares of palm trees were ravaged by fire while the fire was mastered by the civil protection teams.
In media statements, Bilel Ouesfi, regional director of civil protection, “the firefighters managed to contain fire after more than four hours of intervention”.
Still according to the same source, 600 palm trees were heavily damaged by fire, while the causes of the fire remain unknown.
Tozeur oases, located in southwest Tunisia, are in fact frequently struck by fires, often due to high temperatures and drought.
These fires threaten not only the palm groves, which are a vital source of income for the inhabitants, but also the local ecosystem. The fires also destroy local flora and fauna, disturbing ecological balance.
Certain agricultural practices, such as burning agricultural waste, can involuntarily cause fires.
