Twenty tonnes of beef and refrigerated sheep, imported from Romania, arrived this Wednesday, July 16, 2025 in Tunisia. This initiative aims to respond to the shortage noted from Eid Al-Adha and contain the flambé of prices on the local market.
The price set at 38,900 dinars per kilo
Ahmed Laamiri, president of the butchers’ chamber, announced on Wednesday on the show of the show Ahla Sbeh that 20 tonnes of refrigerated meat arrived in Tunisia and were transferred in the morning to the company Ellouhoum. This is the second container imported from the Eid Festival.
The meat will be distributed to butchers and supermarkets, based on a pre -established nominal list, in order to guarantee an equitable distribution.
The price was set at 38,900 dinars per kilo, well below prices observed recently on the local market.
“High quality” meat
Ahmed Laamiri called on all the butchers in the country to submit their request to benefit from this imported meat, which he describes as “high quality”.
He also alerted to a persistent crisis in the supply of sheep meat, due to the reduction of the national livestock, which opens the way to speculative practices. According to him, some sellers no longer hesitate to offer the kilo at prices up to 80 dinars.
Persistent crisis in supply
For several weeks, the Tunisian market has experienced tension on the supply of red meat, especially in sheep meat. The situation has worsened after Eid, while demand remains high. This rarity caused a spectacular price increase, accentuated by speculation and lack of regulation on certain points of sale.
The importation of refrigerated meat is part of an attempt to stabilize the market and to protect the purchasing power of consumers.
