Fatah spokesperson in Gaza, Mounther al-Hayek, called on Hamas to leave power to preserve “the existence of the Palestinians” in Gaza, while Israel intensifies its deadly strikes.
According to Al-Hayek, the continuation of Hamas in power is likely to lead to the disappearance of the Palestinian presence in the Gaza Strip. He also warned that the situation would become more and more difficult for the inhabitants, already overwhelmed by years of suffering.
Since 2007, when Hamas has taken control of Gaza by ousting the Palestinian authority led by the Fatah, attempts to reconcile the two movements failed. The Fatah spokesperson expressed the growing frustration of the inhabitants of Gaza, some of them starting to question Hamas management, particularly after the massive destruction caused by Israeli strikes.
The situation is exacerbated by the resumption of Israeli bombings after the violation of the Truce of January, Israel also suspended humanitarian aid and hardened its requirements. Among these are the demilitarization of Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The latter rejected the Israeli accusations of having chosen war and renewed his calls to a global ceasefire and an exchange of prisoners.
