Diplomatic tensions between Algeria and Morocco are experiencing a new episode. According to Algerian public television, Khaled Cheihani, temporary head of the Consulate General of Morocco in Algeria, was summoned this Thursday to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Algiers.
Received by Mokhtar Amine Khalif, director general of the protocol, the Moroccan diplomat was informed of the decision of the Algerian authorities to declare him persona non grata. It has a maximum period of 48 hours to leave Algerian territory.
According to the authorities of Algiers, this expulsion is motivated by acts deemed suspicious, considered to be incompatible with the functions of a consular representative. These actions, according to the same source, would constitute a violation of the Algerian laws in force as well as international standards, in particular the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
This decision is part of an already tense diplomatic climate between the two neighboring countries, whose relations have been broken since August 2021.
