Serial clippings: Tunisia borders on electric blackout

Tunisia knew sudden electricity interruptions on Monday in several regions of the country. Contrary to what some users would have thought, these are not isolated local breakdowns. In a statement published recently, the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) explained that it was a national preventive decision.

A network on the verge of saturation

According to the STEG, this voluntary cut was to avoid a complete collapse of the electrical network, a blackout generalized, due to a consumption peak never recorded so far, affecting the majority of the country’s governorates.

The public company specifies that its technical teams immediately started the progressive recovery of electricity in the areas concerned. It ensures mobilizing all its resources to stabilize the network and restore normal distribution as soon as possible.

Calls for responsibility and simple gestures

Faced with this extraordinary situation, STEG calls for the patience of citizens and encourages them to limit their consumption, especially during peaks of demand. A recommendation that is difficult to follow while the stifling heat exceeds 45 ° C, transforming everyday life into a test: unusable fans, cut air conditioners, and water shortage with tap.

Recently, STEG has published recommendations for the general public. It invites citizens to postpone the use of the most energy-consuming devices-such as the oven, the washing machine, the hair dryer or the iron after 4 p.m. This simple gesture, she specifies, makes it possible to “protect yourself and protect the country” in the face of a strong increase in energy.

This type of communication is not new. Each summer, STEG renews its calls for moderation, often in reaction to record consumption peaks. In July 2023, Tunisia had crossed a historic threshold of 4,825 MW. In 2024, the trend continued with a new peak at 4363 MW, recorded on July 5 according to the most recent data of the operator.
