On Saturday evening, the Cuauhtemoc school sailboat of the Mexican navy violently hit the bridge of Brooklyn as he left New York. The accident caused the death of two people and was 19 injured, including two in critical condition.
According to the authorities, the ship, 48.2 meters high, lost power as it operated on the East River. Unable to modify his trajectory, he headed for a bridge corruption, causing a frontal shock between his masts and the structure.
Among the 277 people on board, several sailors located on the upper deck were projected on the ground. No passenger fell into the water, and no aquatic rescue operation was necessary.
New York mayor Eric Adams confirmed the accident on X, while Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum expressed his sadness in the face of this “regrettable tragedy”. The Mexican navy ministry assured that the injured were taken care of with the help of the local authorities.
The Brooklyn bridge, briefly closed to traffic, has not undergone any structural damage according to the first inspections. The Cuauhtémoc, en route to Iceland after a four -day stopover, was moved near the Manhattan bridge.
This is the second fatal collision involving a ship and a bridge in the United States in just over a year, after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore in March 2024.
