President Donald Trump announced, in a speech delivered on Monday, the establishment of customs duties of 25 % on products from Tunisia, from August 1, 2025.
This new measure is likely to seriously impact Tunisian exports, as well as exporters who have been dealing with the American market for twenty years, said Marouane Ben Jemaâ, president of the Tunisian American Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He said that negotiations are underway between the Tunisian and American parties in the hope of bringing this rate back to 10 %.
Speaking Tuesday July 8, 2025 on FM mosaic waves, Marouane Ben Jemaâ sent a reassuring message to Tunisians, and more particularly to exporters, claiming that discussions are continuing and that the Tunisian state is deploying significant efforts to reduce this rate.
He added on this subject: “Everyone has to know that the negotiations have already started, that we have a very solid file, and that we will continue dialogue until we reach solutions. We work in order to obtain a positive result. »»
And to conclude: “Tunisia is a sovereign state and we refuse any attack on this sovereignty. No one can impose their conditions for him. We negotiate from a constructive perspective, the signals are positive and our country has enough arguments and economic diplomacy to defend its position. »»
