The lessons were suspended this Friday, November 29, 2024 in the Raoued 1 and Raoued 2 colleges, following acts of violence involving students. The latter threw stones on school buildings and the parking lot reserved for teachers, seriously disturbing the progress of educational activities.
The incident occurred on the sidelines of a teacher demonstration, organized at the call of the General Federation of Secondary Education. The protesters expressed their anger after the tragic death of a colleague at the Ibn Charaf college in Chebba, in the governorate of Mahdia.
Let us recall that a teacher of Islamic education, victim of a harassment and intimidation campaign led by students and individuals foreign to the establishment, without the administration intervening, immune by fire and died last Thursday, succumbing to his burns.
Mohamed Amine Jelibi, secretary general of the secondary education union in Raoued, said that the rapid intervention of the police has made it possible to avoid even more serious consequences.
Since 2017, the Raoued 1 and Raoued 2 colleges must deal with school overcrowding, despite the creation of the second establishment to lighten the workforce. The situation is aggravated by a chronic lack of administrative and educational staff, a problem reported several times to the educational authorities, without any concrete solution having been brought.
This incident once again illustrates the growing tensions in the Tunisian education sector, where teachers’ claims and the structural difficulties of establishments continue to accumulate without adequate response.
