A wave of indignation shakes Menzel Bourguiba after the sudden dismissal of 250 workers from a leather plant. These workers, taken short by this decision, denounce a brutal unemployment and call on the authorities to intervene to defend their rights.
The employees discovered their fate in a most surprising way: their photos were placked on the walls of the factory to report their dismissal. A method qualified as degrading by MP Majda Ouerghi, she reported on her Facebook page.
“It is an attack on the dignity of workers. They have been treated as sought-after criminals, ”she said.
Alerted, the elected official immediately seized the Minister of Social Affairs, the Minister of Employment and the Governor of Bizerte, requesting urgent intervention to protect the rights of dismissed workers.
The employees concerned claim that the factory in question employs nearly 4,000 people, but that the vast majority is subject to precarious contracts of a renewable month, constantly leaving them in a situation of insecurity.
This massive dismissal highlights the fragility of the status of workers in certain industries in Tunisia and raises the question of the protection of workers’ rights to abusive practices.
Faced with this social crisis, licensed workers await a rapid reaction from the authorities. The case arouses strong emotion and could well revive the debate on labor regulations and the protection of employees in Tunisia.
