The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the composition of the jury and the official selection of short films and the Cinef, its section dedicated to school films. For this 78th edition, German director Maren Ade, known in particular for Toni Erdmannwill chair the jury responsible for awarding the golden palm of the short film as well as the three prizes of the Cinef. It will be accompanied by four personalities from horizons and various disciplines: the American Reinaldo Marcus Green, director of King Richard ; the French actress and singer Camélia Jordana; The Spaniard José María Prado, former director of the Filmoteca Española; And the Croatian filmmaker Nebojša Slijepčević. Together, they will have the delicate task of deciding 11 short films in competition and 16 works from the best international cinema schools.

A dense competition, marked by diversity

Selected from 4,781 films viewed, the 11 short films in the running for the Palme d’Or reflect a great diversity of origins, styles and genres. Nine are fictions and two of the animated films. There are five films made by women, a partial parity which testifies to an increasing commitment, although it is uneven, for a better female representation.

Among the titles in competition, Arguments in favor of love From Gabriel Abrantes, lasting 9 minutes, promises a singular proposal, as often in the work of this Portuguese filmmaker accustomed to festivals. Palestinian director Tawfeek Barhom, meanwhile, already provokes curiosity with I’m glad you’re dead nowa title that does not suggest any compromise. Other names also draw attention, such as the French Martine Froissard with Hypersensitiveor the Portuguese director in nunes who proposes A Solidão Dos Lagartosliterally “the loneliness of the lizards”.

The jury will give the golden palm of the short film on Saturday May 24, 2025, during the festival’s list ceremony.

CINEF: a showcase of global student creation

Cannes does not forget the next generation: with the Cinef, he highlights the creativity of cinema students from around the world. For this 28th edition, 16 films were retained on more than 2,700 proposals. There are 13 fictions and 3 animated films, three of which come from schools invited for the first time: Escola Das Artes – UCP (Portugal), Super16 (Denmark) and Estonian Academy of Arts (Estonia). It is also the very first time that an Estonian film has included this selection.

The diversity of the countries represented is remarkable: from Argentina to South Korea, including Romania, Germany, India or even Japan, the proposed stories form a kaleidoscope of looks on the contemporary world. Among the selected titles, Bimo d’Oumnia Hanader, student of the Cinéfabrique (France), meets First Summer of Heo Gayoung (Kafa, South Korea) and Ginger boy From Miki Tanaka (Enbu Seminar, Japan), a 48 -minute film that promises to be one of the longest ever presented in this section.

Note also the presence of The somnambone continent From Jules Vésigot-Wahl, from Fémis (France), which extends the French tradition of author fiction in this selection.

The prices of the CINEF will be given on May 22, 2025, during a ceremony in the Buñuel room, followed by the projection of the award -winning works.

An international jury with crossed sensitivities

The choice of Maren Ade to preside over this jury is not trivial. With a demanding and recognized filmography, the German filmmaker embodies a rigorous and sensitive European cinema. By his side, Reinaldo Marcus Green brings an anchored perspective in contemporary American cinema, while Camélia Jordana offers a look at a multidisciplinary artist, attentive to societal issues. José María Prado, thanks to his long institutional experience, and Nebojša Slijepčević, whose documentary work has been awarded several times, complete this panel with complementary sensitivities.
