The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mondher Belhaj Ali, announced a 30 % increase in the number of students admitted to the Faculties of Medicine. This decision, taken in coordination with the Ministry of Health, aims to meet the urgent needs of the national health sector and to strengthen health security in the different regions of the country, especially in the interior areas with a lack of medical staff.
During a plenary session held in the Assembly of People’s Representatives, the Minister stressed that this orientation is part of a global reforming vision that the ministry deploys, in particular in connection with the system of university orientation.
He also recognized a decrease in the number of baccalaureate holders in the mathematical section, a worrying fact which is currently the subject of consultation with the Ministry of Education. The objective: to support this sector and to encourage students to move towards scientific disciplines, by offering them more opportunities for access to scientific and techniques in higher education.
With regard to the research component, the Minister praised the skills present in Tunisian university establishments. He said that the results obtained in scientific publications and the improvement in the classification of Tunisian universities and laboratories bear witness to the quality of academic work carried out in the country.
