While Tunisians aspire to fluid trips during the summer, road works are making a comeback, transforming highways into an obstacle course.
The company Tunisie Autoroutes announced the launch, as early as June 30, 2025, of a maintenance site on the northern section of the A1 motorway, between kilometers 0 and 67. Objective displayed: Improve infrastructure and guarantee the safety of users.
But this announcement falls like an already seen for many drivers, exasperated by a well-established habit: to start major works in the middle of the summer season. A critical moment when traffic increases, boosted by vacation departures, the feedback from the diaspora and tourist trips. Result: slowdowns, caps, stress and cascading delays.
For the authorities, security does not wait. “This is a necessary maintenance operation on damaged points,” said Tunisie Autoroutes, calling on motorists to respect signaling and reduce their speed.
But for many users, the question persists: why not anticipate these interventions in low season, when the traffic is less dense and the inconveniences less?
In the meantime, drivers will have to take their pain in patience and redouble vigilance when approaching construction zones. In Tunisia, summer is definitely the orange cones season … and nerves.
